MY Sports Club Story: Katy Beth

Today we’re featuring our Astoria Club member, Katy Beth. Katy Beth joined this year after embarking on a fitness journey to get stronger and seek a gym with more options. Katy Beth has quickly gotten hooked on Team Training, even winning our recent Team Training Challenge for taking the most classes in 2 weeks. Read on for why she loves incorporating Team Training classes into her routine, her valuable fitness advice, and inspiration to kickstart your own fitness journey.

Why did you join NYSC + what keeps you coming back?
I joined on January 31, 2023, because I wanted a gym that had more to offer than the one I was attending previously. I loved how welcoming everyone was when I first walked in! I also loved that there were so many things I could do - from cycling to free weights to Boxing Academy - it was everything that I wanted in a gym. But the things that keep me coming back are definitely the classes and the trainers. The trainers know me by name - even if I’ve only taken one class with them! They are so kind and so helpful and they genuinely elevate my gym experience.

Why do you love being a member of NYSC?
My favorite part about being an NYSC member is the feeling of community that I have. I’m typically at the gym by about 6 am every day to lift before taking a 7 am Team Training class. It’s cool how even in a few short months, I know the people who are there in the mornings and we cheer each other on, help one another with a spot, and keep each other accountable if we’re late or miss a day!

What are your favorite activities?
My favorite activities are the Team Training classes: The Boxing Academy and  Functional Field training classes.

Best fitness advice?
I think that it is less about the motivation for me and more about discipline. There are days when I simply don’t want to wake up and be in the gym at 6am (can you blame me?!). But, I know that I always feel better after I work out, and it’s truly the only place where you get out what you put in. Although, one bit of motivation I have is knowing that I feel better than I ever have because I’ve lost 60 pounds in 9 months!! Being able to see the changes and feel myself getting stronger is some really great motivation to keep going.

How do Team Training Classes play a role in your fitness routine?
I began doing the Boxing Academy trial when it first started because I wanted to add something new to my routine. I had never taken boxing before, but the trainers were able to teach me the basics of how to throw a punch without getting hurt and continually push me to get better every single day. Then I began to take Functional Field training as well, which I really love because it is 50 minutes of nonstop work, but also nonstop motivation and dancing in between sets (at least for me haha). So now, depending on the day, I will lift weights and then go to boxing, or I will use the Functional Field training as my lifting workout. But, I try to take at least one class every day!

What’s your best advice for someone starting their fitness journey?
My biggest advice to anybody starting a fitness journey is to take things slow and never compare your day one to someone else’s day 1000. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you don’t know how to do an exercise because form matters more than the amount of weight you lift. And the second biggest piece of advice I have is to do something that you brings you joy and whether it’s lifting weights or taking a cycling class or boxing, the best way to keep going is to keep doing exercises that you love.
