Meet Helen: Breast Cancer Conqueror

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are privileged to introduce you to Helen, an inspiring member of NYSC, as part of our MY Sports Club Story Series. With over 25 years as a dedicated member and a remarkable 33-year journey as a cancer conqueror, Helen embodies resilience and vitality. Her passion for group fitness is not only a testament to her commitment but also the driving force behind her victorious health journey. Learn more about Helen's remarkable story and her triumphant path as a Cancer Conqueror, as she likes to call it.

How long have you been a member of NYSC?
It’s been around 25 years! I’ve been coming consistently and joined through Silver Sneakers (a fitness program designed for people ages 65 and older) around 8 years ago.

Why did you join NYSC and what’s your favorite part about being a member?
I joined NYSC because I wanted to stay healthy and wanted to lose some weight. I love the variety of classes offered from Cycling to BodyPUMP and Body Balance which recently launched and requires more stretching and flexibility. It’s great seeing younger people there and knowing I can keep up. I used to be a member of a different gym, and when my favorite Cycle instructor moved to NYSC, I decided to try it and never looked back!

Can you share a bit about your breast cancer journey, from diagnosis to where you are today?
I am 33 years breast cancer-free. It’s been so rewarding. I didn’t go to chemotherapy as I had a self-controlled cancer so I took it upon myself to go to the gym and change my diet, and that really saved me. Things have changed these days, so I would definitely consult with a doctor, I was able to heal with lifestyle changes. I also want to mention I don’t like to use the word survivor. I am a conqueror. I am unstoppable. I conquered cancer.

How did you get involved in setting up our Cycle for a Cause Event?
Another NYSC member's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, so I got involved in this event with him. We started it around 9-10 years ago and encouraged everyone to wear pink to create awareness for Breast Cancer. This year the rooms were decorated with balloons and posters, and it was so great to see everyone come together and support!

What motivated and inspired you to stay active and maintain your fitness during your breast cancer journey?
I had a mastectomy, and I didn't want chemotherapy, so I had to change my lifestyle.  You have to get into a routine even if it’s only a few days a week. At NYSC every day is a different kind of class so I love to go regularly. Luckily, I am retired so it’s easier to find time, but when I was working I had to build a routine. You have to make time for yourself.

Were there any particular workouts or exercises that played a role in your recovery?
Cycling for sure, which is what helped inspire the class and then the different BodyPUMP classes. I prefer to work out through Group Fitness because I love the energy. It’s a big group of people and we’re all there for the same reason: to work out and be healthy. It’s amazing seeing the same faces over the years in addition to new ones. It is a family, a workout family.

How did the support of your fitness community, family, and friends impact your journey?
In 2016 I also had a stroke. I was at the gym and thought I was experiencing Vertigo. I did not know by the time I got home I had 2 strokes. During this hard time my gym family was right there for me, especially TJ (from the Group Fitness Team). From helping to get my grip back and getting my health back, my NYSC family was always there for me. Thanks to my fitness, I was able to bounce back. I had a foundation to come back to.

Can you offer advice or words of encouragement to others facing breast cancer or health challenges?
Exercise is so important. Change your diet. Listen to your doctors. Drink a lot of water. Get proper sleep (rest is so important) and stay humble.

Are there specific initiatives or organizations related to breast cancer awareness that you're involved in or would like to highlight?
I was involved with a project called the Witness Project of Harlem out of Mount Sinai where a group of us went to different organizations to show other women how to do a self-examination and tell our stories. I am also a great-grandmother and my great-grandson, Kameron, is also a conqueror - two years cancer-free! You can support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Light the Night, which funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world, provides free information and support services, and is the voice for all blood cancer patients seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care.

Can you share any personal goals or achievements related to your fitness journey post-treatment?
I have lost weight, and my skin glows, but most importantly I am happy.

What message would you like to convey to individuals about the importance of early detection and breast cancer awareness?
Early detection is what saved me. That’s how I found out. Before even going to a doctor I felt a lump on myself. It’s so important to be in tune with your body and constantly be aware. Knowing the signs for early detection saves lives.
